A revolutionary training model

If you are considering a career in the tourism industry and have your eyes set on exploring the brilliance of South Africa’s cultural and natural heritage, then a tourist guiding career may just be what you’re looking for.

The TDM Guide Academy is a training facility that combines the theoretical understanding of tourist guiding with a practical component that is directly linked to real-world operations. This facility therefore provides the opportunity for students to travel with expert guides and receive on-the-job training and mentoring whilst they complete their curriculum… but that’s not where it ends!

Upon successful completion of the tourist guiding course, students will have an opportunity for full-time employment contract at Tourvest Destination Management, one of South Africa’s largest travel organisations.

The benefits of the TDM Guide Academy

The TDM Guide Academy has partnered-up with industry-leading training providers to offer a 10-month culture guiding course to 8 learners. Students embarking on the TDM Guide Academy intake programme will receive the following training:

  • A full FET Certificate in Tourism: Guiding (71549 qualification), including accreditation for Gauteng province
  • Accreditation for all addition 8 South African provinces (totalling a national accreditation)
  • First Aid level 1 certificate
  • On-the-job training for transfers, meet and greets, day tours, and overland tours
  • Mentorship from accredited and specialist TDM Tourist Guides
  • Regular performance assessments and company-specific training
  • Direct exposure to the tourism value-chain, including Tourvest partners and suppliers
  • Course payment options
  • Full-time employment upon successful completion of the course*

The costs of the TDM Guide Academy are available upon request, including conditions of payment.
*A full-time employment contract will be awarded to candidates who complete the course successfully within the required timeframe, and upon TDM Guide Academy management’s discretion.

How do I qualify as a candidate?

The TDM Guide Academy is a highly specialised training facility that maximises a student’s exposure into the tourism industry. We do this by utilising Tourvest extensive network of businesses in order to broaden each student’s knowledge of the field, with real-world application. We therefore have to be quite selective on our recruitment and selection process in order to identify the right type of individual to undertake this journey with us.

The TDM Guide Academy will start its 2016 intake in January 2016, with the formal training commencing in February 2016. Recruitment is opened for all qualifying candidates on an ongoing basis, with selection commencing in January 2016. The TDM Guide Academy is currently limited to eight (8) successful candidates. In order to qualify for the programme, please ensure that you have the following requirements:

  • Between the ages of 21 – 45 (Male or Female)
  • Speak either German and/or Italian fluently
  • Be in possession of a valid South African driver’s license and/or professional drivers permit (PrDP). For more information on how to obtain one, please visit:

  • Must be willing to travel within South Africa
